In 2022 Butterfly Bakery of Vermont purchased Fat Toad Farm, inheriting their tradition of award-winning traditional goat’s milk caramel. This step deepened our connection to Vermont’s working lands and added a touch of sweetness to our fiery roots.
Now, whether it's a smoked onion hot sauce or a silky sweet caramel, our farm-to-bottle approach celebrates Vermont’s bounty with every bottle and jar. Both brands share one mission: to honor our farmers, our land, and the people who gather around food.

Cajeta is very similar to the ever popular dulce de leche, a dairy based confection that uses cow’s milk. Cajeta, on the other hand, has its roots in Mexico and is based on goat’s milk. Our Fat Toad Farm traditional goat's milk caramel is made in this style.
Cajeta typically starts with a thickened syrup made of sweetened caramelized milk. Mexican cajeta is popularly associated with the city of Celaya in the state of Guanajuato, but it is also produced with the traditional method in several towns of the state of Jalisco, such as Mazamitla and Sayula.

Spicy is subjective—what feels like a fire alarm to one person might be a pleasant tingle to another. That’s why we created a handy 0–6 heat scale (pepper or flame icons depending on the label), to help you find your happy place:
- 0 = No heat
- 🔥 = Very mild
- 🔥🔥 = Mild
- 🔥🔥🔥 = Medium
- 🔥🔥🔥🔥 = Hot
- 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 = Very hot
- 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 = Extremely hot
Most of our hot sauces live somewhere in the middle of the scale - bold, flavorful, and just the right kind of kick. But we’ve made sure there’s at least one sauce in every category, so whether you’re heat-shy or a capsaicin connoisseur, there’s something for you.
Perhaps most important of all, we never chase heat just for the sake of it. Our sauces are always crafted for flavor first - bright, balanced, and true to the peppers we use. Because what’s the point of fire if there’s nothing delicious fueling it?

Orders over $70? Shipping’s on us.
Under $70? We calculate shipping based on your order’s weight and where it’s going.
Most orders ship within a few days if placed before our mail pickup (between noon–3pm ET).
During sales or busy weekends (like Black Friday!), it might take a little longer.

Are your products gluten- and/or dairy-free?
Are your products gluten- and/or dairy-free?
Some are! But not all - so here’s the scoop:
Our Fat Toad Farm Goat’s Milk Caramel is made with - you guessed it - dairy. But there are no gluten-containing ingredients in our caramel.
We use whole spelt flour in many of our Maple-sweetened Baked Goods, which does contain gluten. We use gluten-free oats in our granolas and we have no dairy in any of our baked goods.
Generally speaking, all of hot sauces, mustards, salsas and tomato sauces don’t contain gluten or dairy ingredients themselves (unless they are made with beer). However, they’re made in a shared facility where those allergens are present, so if you have a severe allergy, we recommend reaching out before placing your order - we’re happy to answer specific questions.

If you live in Vermont and parts of northern New England, there's a good chance you'll find at least some of our products (especially hot sauces and Fat Toad Farm caramel) at local small local stores and food co-ops nearby.

We’re so glad you asked - this is the fun part.
Our Fat Toad Farm traditional goat's milk caramels aren’t just for dessert (though they do love a scoop of vanilla ice cream). Try a drizzle on fresh fruit, swirl it into your morning yogurt or cup of coffee, or sneak a spoonful straight from the jar - we won’t tell.
Hot sauces? They’re kitchen MVPs. Stir into soups, splash onto eggs, perk up your tacos, zhuzh up a grain bowl - you really can’t go wrong. We focus on flavor-first sauces, so they pair beautifully with everything from breakfast to barbecue.
